llms.txt on Shopify: what you already have and when to change it
Short version: Since May 2026 every Shopify store serves /agents.md, mirrored at /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt. You can replace it with a theme template. A custom one helps agents understand what you sell, but it won't get you into ChatGPT shopping on its own, because product listings there come from Shopify's catalog.

What llms.txt is
llms.txt is a plain Markdown file at the root of a site that tells AI models what the site is and where the important pages are. It's a proposed convention, not a standard every AI company has promised to read. Think of it as a cheat sheet you leave out for robots: cheap to make, sometimes read, never harmful.
What Shopify gives you now
In May 2026 Shopify started serving a default /agents.md for every store, and the /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt paths serve the same content. Themes can override them with templates:
templates/agents.md.liquidcontrols/agents.mdand is the fallback for the other two.templates/llms.txt.liquidandtemplates/llms-full.txt.liquidoverride just their own path.
The catch: these templates run in a restricted Liquid context. Only the request and agents objects work. agents gives you the store name and URL, sitemap, and the store's UCP discovery and MCP endpoint URLs. shop, collections and products aren't available, so you can't loop over your catalog. Anything about what you sell has to be written in by hand.
Is a custom one worth it?
If Shopify's default describes you well enough, leave it. A custom file is worth it when you want agents to know things the default can't say: what you're known for, your main collections, who your products are for, and your shipping and returns in a sentence. Keep it short and keep it true. A stale list of products and prices is worse than none.
How to add one
- Generate a draft with our llms.txt generator, which reads your public catalog and keeps Shopify's live UCP and MCP links.
- In Shopify admin go to Online Store → Themes, open the menu on your live theme and pick Edit code.
- Under Templates, add a new template named
agents.md.liquidand paste the draft. Rewrite the summary line in your own words. - Save, then open
yourstore.com/agents.mdand/llms.txtto check. - Put a reminder in your calendar to review it each quarter.
If you set up an old workaround, such as a URL redirect from /llms.txt to a file in Shopify Files, remove it. It can hide the file Shopify maintains.
Questions
Does my Shopify store already have an llms.txt?
Yes. Since May 2026 Shopify serves a default /agents.md for every store, and /llms.txt mirrors it unless your theme overrides it.
Will llms.txt get my products into ChatGPT?
No. Product listings in AI shopping channels come from Shopify's catalog and agentic storefronts. llms.txt helps an agent understand your store once it's there.
Can I upload llms.txt to Shopify Files or theme assets?
Files and assets are served from other paths, not your store's root, so agents won't find them there. Use the agents.md.liquid or llms.txt.liquid template instead.
