Shopify agentic storefronts: how your products end up in ChatGPT and Copilot

Axion Technologies · updated

Short version: Agentic storefronts, launched in Shopify's Winter '26 Edition, let shoppers find and buy your products inside AI assistants. Shopify says eligible stores are agent-ready by default. Being listed is the easy part; being the product an agent recommends depends on your data.

What they are

In December 2025 Shopify announced agentic storefronts: a way for merchants' products to appear and be bought inside AI assistants, starting with ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, with more channels since. The assistant draws on your product data, policies and FAQs to answer shopper questions.

Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke described the goal as making every store "agent-ready by default." In practice, eligible stores are included without setup, and you manage which AI channels you sell through in your Shopify admin.

Listed isn't the same as picked

When a shopper asks an assistant for "waterproof trail shoes under $150 that ship to Canada by Friday," the agent has to decide which of many listed products fits. It can only use what your data says. If size 9 is out of stock but your feed doesn't say so, or shipping time is only in a paragraph on a policy page, another store gets the sale.

What agents look at

  • Product data: clear titles, real descriptions, product type, and attributes in metafields (material, fit, size) rather than buried in images.
  • Variants: every size and color with its own price, stock and identifier.
  • Identifiers: GTINs and brand, so the agent can match your product across stores. See our GTIN guide.
  • Policies: shipping and returns set up in Shopify, so they're data, not just prose.
  • Reviews: a review app that outputs ratings as data.

Not on Shopify's storefront?

Brands that sell mainly somewhere else can still add products to Shopify's catalog to reach these AI channels.

Questions

Is my Shopify store in ChatGPT already?

If it's eligible, probably. Shopify includes eligible stores' products in AI channels by default, and you can manage those channels in your admin. Whether an agent recommends you depends on your product data.

Which AI assistants do agentic storefronts cover?

Shopify launched with ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, and has been adding more, with Google's AI Mode and Gemini in early access.

Do I need an app?

No app is needed to be listed. Apps and tools help with the data quality that decides whether you're picked.
